Want to become a mentor?
To become an AWAWS academic mentor, you will need to:
1: be a current AWAWS member
Please contact us at [email protected] if you are unsure if your membership is current and/or visit the Membership page to join. Please note that it is important to maintain your AWAWS membership over the course of your participation in the program.
2. have at least one of the following:
- a published peer-reviewed work(s) in ancient world studies, museum studies and/or a related field;
- a Masters degree or higher qualification in ancient world studies, museum studies and/or a related field;
- experience as an editor of an academic journal focusing on ancient world studies, museum studies and/or a related field, OR be an active member of an editorial board of a peer-reviewed journal;
- tenure of a Fellowship either international or external at an Australasian or international university;
- an awarded Research and/or Learning and Teaching Grant (university/national/international);
- membership of a professional association related to ancient world studies, museum studies, and/or a related field (please include details of your role);
- academic mentoring experience, specifically in the area of ancient world studies, museum studies and/or a related field.
3. agree to read and implement the mentoring recommendations outlined in the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide: A Guide to Mentors and Mentees
The guide provides an easy step-by-step process for both mentees and mentors and contains essential information on:

Want to become a mentee?
Please complete the following steps:
Step 1: Ensure that you are a current AWAWS Member

Step 2: Visit the Meet our Mentors page
The AWAWS Academic Mentoring Program requires mentees to be proactive in searching for a mentor. Please visit the Meet Our Mentors page where you will find a list of mentors, all of whom have experience in ancient world studies, museum studies or related fields.
Step 3: Submit an Expression of Interest
Download our Expression of Interest from and fill in your details. Completed forms can be submitted to the AWAWS Academic Mentor Program Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides ([email protected]; please CC [email protected]) where you agree to read and implement the recommendations outlined in the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide and comply with the obligations and standards set out in the Code of Conduct of your affiliated institution. You will then be provided with a copy of the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide: A Guide to Mentors and Mentees.

Step 4: Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide
Refer to and implement the recommendations outlined in the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide: A Guide to Mentors and Mentees which provides an easy step-by-step process for both mentees and mentors. The guide contains essential information on:
- how to begin and build a mentoring relationship with identified key skills for both mentees and mentors;
- the confidentiality agreement to be signed by both mentees and mentors;
- practical advice for framing a first meeting, ongoing meetings and a final meeting via a case study approach; and
- recommended checklists, meeting minutes and reflection exercises.
Step 5: Build a mentor relationship
Select an academic mentor from the list and follow the recommendations outlined in the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide: A Guide to Mentors and Mentees on how to begin and build a mentoring relationship.
Step 6: Complete the Mentoring Agreement
Once an academic mentor has agreed to enter into a mentoring relationship, please email a copy of the signed Mentoring Agreement to the AWAWS Academic Mentor Program Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides ([email protected]; please CC [email protected]). The agreement is available in the Spectrum Approach to Mentoring Guide: A Guide to Mentors and Mentees.
